MENA Newswire News Desk: India’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) to enhance cooperation in communications and space technology. This agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, promoting collaborative initiatives in telecommunications regulation and space technologies.

The MoU, signed today at an international conference hosted by TRAI in New Delhi, marks the 20th such bilateral agreement for TRAI. Established by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1997, TRAI’s mission is to facilitate the growth of telecommunications in India, ensuring that the country remains a leader in the global information society. Saudi Arabia’s CST plays a similar role in its country, regulating the communications and space sectors.

Vandana Sethi, TRAI’s Advisor on International Relations, emphasized the significance of the MoU, noting that it “formalizes the long-standing bilateral relations” between India and Saudi Arabia in the area of communications regulation. This agreement builds on existing cooperation between the two nations and opens the door for future joint activities in space technology, communications, and regulatory matters.

The MoU was signed during the inaugural session of the international conference titled “Emerging Trends in Regulation,” which focused on current and future trends in telecom regulation. India’s Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, delivered a message to the conference, highlighting the importance of non-terrestrial networks in shaping the future of communications technology. He stated that these networks will “unlock new vistas, expanding the horizons of communication technologies, ultimately serving our collective journey towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs).”

The one-day conference brought together global telecommunications leaders, including Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The event provided a platform for discussing emerging regulatory challenges and opportunities as countries navigate the fast-evolving communications landscape.

This MoU further underscores India’s commitment to fostering stronger relations with the Gulf region, particularly in sectors like telecommunications and space technology. It aligns with both nations’ broader goals to collaborate on advanced technology initiatives that drive innovation and contribute to global connectivity efforts.
